CMM 2001 Preview
Two years ago at CMM 99 I met with editors of BCI and we discussed the needs and merits of a monthly column dedicated to the digital side of packaging prepress. Shortly after that meeting I began writing for the magazine and Digital Connections began a regular appearance in January 2000. To say there has been an explosion of innovation, technological advance and a change in the general landscape since that show would be a serious understatement. CMM 01, (www.cmmshow.com) held in Chicago April 23rd to 26th will showcase all these changes and a few that have not yet been unveiled.
In 1999 the biggest buzz at the show - as far as digital connections was concerned - was offset CTP. In hindsight there must have been a lot of offset folding carton manufactures looking seriously at the technology because the past six months has shown a number of key folding carton printers adopting widespread implementing of CTP technologies...TO VIEW THE ENTIRE ARTICLE DOWNLOAD THE PDF

The DOW is down, Should a Digital Workflow Still be in Your Future?
The short answer is Yes! I have seen great strides over the past two years in packaging converters adopting digital workflows. In North America alone there are around 150 large format offset CTP devices imaging folding carton plates. My fear is that the economic slowdown we are in the midst of will slow this push to develop digital workflows. The truth of the matter is, now is the best time to implement such changes.
Adding a sense of urgency is the trend of more and more commercial printers getting into the folding carton business (brought on by economic changes in their traditional markets). Many folding carton manufactures have lost some work in recent months to a commercial printer just getting into the folding carton market...TO VIEW THE ENTIRE ARTICLE DOWNLOAD THE PDF

Gaining Control of Your Process
I recently had a very enlightening conversation with a good friend and client. One reason this conversation was so enlightening was that it was with one of the most forward thinking people I know related to digital graphics development in packaging. This conversation centered around identifying the needs of each participant involved in the development and execution of packaging graphics.
We listed out the key players in the process and what drives them. As the discussion unfolded it became clear that each group was looking for the same thing from their own perspective. They were all looking for control...TO VIEW THE ENTIRE ARTICLE DOWNLOAD THE PDF

2001 Digital Pre-Press Preview
Well, it is that time of year again. Each client I talked with over the past month or so has asked me the same question "Kevin, where do you see the industry going over the next few years?" Judging from the feedback I have received on the past two Digital Connections topics Digital Printing and E-Commerce Opportunities I can only assume that this question is on most of your minds as well. Lets take a sneak peak at the next 12 months.
The next few years will see an increased introduction and implementation of ECS systems and processes. What is an ECS system or process you might ask? Well ECS stands for Enhanced Customer Service and any system or process that enhances a companies ability to provide quality customer service is an ECS system or process. As it relates to digital graphics in 2001, ECS systems will fit into five related categories; Digital Prepress, Digital Printing, Digital Asset Management, Remote Collaborative Viewing and Proofing and E-Commerce...TO VIEW THE ENTIRE ARTICLE DOWNLOAD THE PDF
